NEW YORK and ROSEMONT, Ill., July 26, 2011 – It will be a “scrumdiddlyumptious” gathering when the five child stars from the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory reunite 40 years after the release of the now classic film at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con at the Donald E. The original 1971 film, based on Roald Dahl’s book and screenplay, told the story of five children who won the opportunity to tour the fictional, world famous Wonka Chocolate Factory after finding a “golden ticket” in packages of Wonka chocolate.  The poor but extremely good-hearted Charlie is joined by the other four, whose quirks have made them among the most memorable characters ever as the film has achieved cult status.  All-time greats Gene Wilder, who played the eccentric Wonka, and Jack Albertson, who portrayed Charlie’s beloved Grandpa Joe, starred in the feature roles.

“This is a truly unique opportunity to meet the five child actors who helped make Willy Wonka such a classic movie,” said Gareb Shamus, Wizard World CEO.  “It is these kinds of once-in-a-lifetime events that make Wizard World shows so interesting and exciting for fans of all ages.”

The five will be among such other distinguished celebrities at Chicago Comic Con as Patrick Stewart, Bruce Campbell, Christopher Lloyd, Morena Baccarin, Felicia Day, Anthony Michael Hall, Academy Award Winner® Lou Gossett Jr. and James Marsters.

Waterman Ent. nabs ‘Morituri’
Alien-invasion series published by Marvel Comics in the ’80s
By Dave McNary

Waterman Entertainment has acquired film rights to alien-invasion comicbook series “Strikeforce: Morituri” and plans to start production in December.

The series, created by writer Peter B. Gillis, was published between 1986 and 1989 by Marvel Comics. Gillis and Connor Cochran are writing the script, and Jeff Beard will be a producer on the film.

The story centers on aliens who strip Earth of all its resources and a scientist who discovers a method of giving humans superhuman powers — but the process results in the superheroes dying within a year after acquiring their powers.

The title comes from the Latin phrase “Morituri te salutamus” — “We who are about to die salute you!”

“The premise of ‘Strikeforce’ is one that hasn’t been explored in film before and we believe will resonate with today’s film and comicbook fans,” said exec VP Tucker Waterman. “In the spirit of Comic-Con and with the help of the distinguished Peter Gillis, we’re eager to bring this story to life.”

Steve Waterman, who founded Waterman Entertainment in 1999, co-produced “Casper” and exec produced the “Alvin” and “Stuart Little” films, setting up the projects at their respective studios.

“Strikeforce” is the first film that the Waterman brothers are developing at Waterman Entertainment.

[Press] – Gary Scott Beatty’s Jazz Feature in Indie Comics Magazine #3

Gary Scott Beatty’s Jazz Feature in Indie Comics Magazine #3

An 8 page story in Gary Scott Beatty’s ’50s retro jazz style will appear in the new Indie Comics Magazine, scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors’

August 2011 Previews catalog and available ONLY through Previews. The done-in-one tale features characters Beatty developed in his Xeric Grant winning

book Jazz: Cool Birth.

“After years of working in a grunge style, I’m now fascinated by the flat, design oriented jazz albums of the 1950s,” said Beatty. His Jazz: Cool Birth, a

murder mystery in a 1957 jazz club with art and typography based on ’50s album cover design, earned him a Xeric Foundation Grant in 2008.

The first alternative comic Beatty produced (They were called “underground” then) was on his high school’s ditto machine, after hours, without permission.

He colors, letters and produces comic books and magazines for a diverse range of companies and has written for Comic Buyer’s Guide.

Beatty studies album cover design, television program title artwork, and common illustrations used in everything from health booklets to instruction manuals

from the ’50s to develop a style unique to the new millennium. “I swear it’s harder to illustrate in this style,” he explained. “When you’re drawing

realistically, you have real objects to look at to let you know when it’s right.  With my design-oriented style, there’s nothing in reality for reference. It just

has to feel balanced, slick and communicate the right mood.”

The artist’s tools are modern and digital, but the process of pushing things around on the page remains the same as 1957, said Beatty. “Artists used to work

with T-squares and triangles, tracing paper, ruling pens and brush, preparing work for rotary letterpresses and similar hands-on intensive printing methods.

That’s where the style developed.”

Each issue of Indie Comics Magazine features full stories from many independent comic book creators, said Beatty. Short biographies and contact information are

included so readers can easily seek out more of the creators’ work. Beatty’s own done-in-one comic books are available at http://aazurn.com.

Indie Comics Magazine is 64 pages of the best story and art from today’s independent comic book creators. No huge overprint, no digital version, no back

issue sales, August’s Previews under Aazurn Publishing is the ONLY way comic readers can get Indie Comics Magazine #3! Visit Indie Comics Magazine online at

http://indiecomicsmagazine.com.

From Robot 6

[Reader question:] Unless you guys are going to announce something amazing within the next few moths, DC epicly won this year. Though, I always buy anything involving Spider-Man, so you will get more business there.

[Tom Brevoort:] Yes, they’ve epicly won their way down to being 25% of the market. if they keep winning at this rate, they’ll be out of business before long. They’re the Charlie Sheens of comics, winning their way to extinction.

The broad strokes of the Legion’s origin are well known, but you’ve never seen the secret machinations that went on behind the scenes! Why was the organization known as the United Planets formed? Who tried to kill R.J. Brande the first time? And what great power could leave entire planets desolate and lifeless? Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad may have founded the Legion, but the story starts here!
