Marvel Makes A Digital Land Grab Ahead Of The DC New 52

In three week’s time, DC begins to publish all its superhero DCU (DC Universe) books as day-and-date digital, selling them on the same day in digital format as well as print, via their ComiXology App.

Today however, Marvel have snuck in there first with a different offering. Making all their digital comics available on the iPad/iPhone/Android now also available through their ComiXology App on the web.

So now you don’t have to buy into a way of life to read those comics digitally. You can let your phone be your phone, and let digital comics be read the way they were meant to be. On a sideways-turned laptop. 3500 of them.

COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM; BLUEWATER UNVEILS LESSON PLANS FOR EDUCATORS

There was a time that reading a comic book in class was a one-way ticket to detention. However, as educators seek new and innovative ways to inspire learning and comprehension, publisher Bluewater Productions takes the next step in unveiling a series of multi-discipline lesson plans that incorporate graphic novels and, yes, comic books.

Developed in partnership with educator and driving force behind the popular resource “The Graphic Classroom” Chris Wilson, educators and librarians can access a free and fully developed lesson plan that incorporates several of Bluewater’s non-fiction titles.

“I know that reading is a problem for many students today. I feel strongly that comics and graphic novels can be one way that we can combat this problem. Graphics novels should be in every public school library and classroom library.” said Wilson.

The lesson plans, available through Bluewater, incorporate a multi-discipline analysis of several biographical graphic novels and comic books including language, historical perspective, conceptual thinking, decision making and other skills appropriate for elementary and middle school students. The plans use a variety of exercises, talking points and activity prompts.

In the first collection available this August, educators can choose from a selection of current historical figures such as Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama, influential modern authors like SE Hinton, JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer or a variety of culturally impactful celebrities like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

“I was one of those students in danger of falling through the cracks,” said Bluewater president Darren Davis. “I was a borderline student and a poor reader. But once I discovered comic books, I couldn’t put them down. My vocabulary increased; my comprehension improved. I can honestly say that comic books gave me the confidence I needed to eventually tackle Shakespeare and Steinbeck.”

Bluewater, based in Vancouver, WA, strives to entertain comic book fans, but also support schools and library systems by holding educational seminars, literacy programs, speaking tours and hands-on events while providing reading material that capture and engage the reader in a literary and visual manner.

Wilson’s The Graphic Classroom (http://graphicclassroom.blogspot.com/) is a resource for teachers and librarians to help them stock high quality, educational-worthy, graphic novels and comics in their classroom or school library. Wilson reads and reviews every graphic novel or comic on this website and rates its appropriateness for the classroom.

Over the next several months additional lesson plans will be released using Bluewater’s vast library of titles. They include several biography titles that have received national attention: Female Force, Political Power, Fame, and Orbit series. Samples of each title are available on the Bluewater website.

There is no cost for the lesson plans. Copies of the individual issues and graphic novels are available at a significant discount for classroom use. These can be ordered directly through Bluewater Productions at www.bluewaterprod.com.

Golden Age Legend Bellman Appears in Indie Comics Magazine #3

A story by Golden Age legend Allen Bellman, who worked on Captain America in 1942, will appear in Indie Comics Magazine #3, announced Editor Gary Scott

Beatty. Indie Comics Magazine #3 is scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors’ August 2011 Previews catalog and available ONLY through Previews.

Bellman became a staff artist at Timely and, while still a teenager, drew backgrounds for Syd Shores’ Captain America in 1942. He later worked on The

Patriot, The Destroyer, The Human Torch, Jap Buster Johnson and Jet Dixon of the Space Squadron, All Winners Comics, Marvel Mystery, Sub Mariner Comics, Young

Allies and many more.

Let’s Play Detective was Bellman’s comic book creation. He also contributed to Atlas pre-Code horror, crime, war and western titles.

In the ’50s Bellman moved to work for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He is also a photographer whose work has appeared on hundreds of books and in museum

exhibits. He can still be seen at conventions and still accepts commissions. In 2007 he received the Inkpot Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Comic Arts

at the San Diego Comic-Con International.

Allen Bellman’s story and work can be seen at allenbellman.com.

Bellman’s Indie Comics Magazine story is his first new comic book work in 50 years, said Terry Cronin of 3 Boys Productions, the publisher who provided the

story. “We’re lucky to be able to offer this in print,” said Beatty. “This is the first time this has appeared in pamphlet form.”

Each issue of Indie Comics Magazine features full stories from many independent comic book creators, said Beatty. Short biographies and contact information are

included so readers can easily seek out more of the creators’ work. Indie Comics Magazine #3 features a space dragon cover painting by Susan Van Camp.

Indie Comics Magazine is 64 pages of the best story and art from today’s independent comic book creators. No huge overprint, no digital version, no back

issue sales, August’s Previews under Aazurn Publishing is the ONLY way comic readers can get Indie Comics Magazine #3! Visit Indie Comics Magazine online at

http://indiecomicsmagazine.com.
